The usual response to a rising CPL is reactive: the dashboard shows the problem after 3-5 days of degraded efficiency and budget already spent on an architecture that no longer converts well. Creative fatigue almost always gives you a window of warning — if you know where to look.
CPL rises once the algorithm has exhausted the most efficient audience available for that creative and starts expanding into segments with lower propensity to convert. By then the system has been running in degraded mode for days.
The early signals of fatigue come before CPL: they are in how people interact — or stop interacting — with the ad, before it shows up in cost per conversion.
A CTR falling consistently for 3 straight days — even if it is still "acceptable" in absolute terms — means the audience that hasn't converted is already ignoring the ad. The creative has lost novelty. CTR decay typically precedes the CPL spike by 3-5 days in high-volume operations.
When average frequency passes 2.8 in the ad set's main audience segment, most people have already seen the ad several times. The algorithm starts looking for new audience — which converts worse — to keep delivery pace. Monitor frequency by segment, not just the campaign-wide average.
If engagement metrics (ThruPlay, 75% video views, saves) drop in the retargeting audience — people who already know the brand — the message has lost relevance for those already exposed. This signal is especially useful in telecom campaigns with longer consideration cycles.
